Mermaid Birthday Cake for Girls

This was a two-tier chocolate birthday cake for a little girl’s party. This special cake is decorated in ocean and mermaid theme with lots of little details and edible sea creatures cake decorations. The mermaid was meant to look like Ariel from the well-known Disney movie. I did my best to make this main cake decoration look like her.

Traditionally I covered and decorated this mermaid birthday cake using marshmallow fondant, which is fast and easy to make and colour to create any kind of birthday cake design.

No matter how many birthday cakes I have made and decorated I am still practicing covering the cakes with marshmallow fondant. It is not the easiest thing to cover a cake ideally smoothly with no cracks or wrinkles.

In such cases sugar icing drawings or little fondant decorations, like leaves, rocks, flowers etc. are very very handy. They fix all little problems on the fondant and make any special birthday cake look even better.

To make the water effect with my fondant I used two parts of marshmallow fondant and twisted them together until it reached this kind of marble effect.

To decorate my sea world birthday cake I used chocolate moulds to make fondant sea horses, seashells and some other edible cake decorations. I used lots of colours and sparkles because it was a kids’ birthday party and this birthday mermaid cake was for a girl.

For a final touch, I used mermaid birthday candles. I think it was a wonderful addition to this colourful and fun ocean themed birthday cake.
